Score study is the both conductor's privilege and responsibility. It provides the foundation for all aspects of the conductor's art, craft, and career. While it is a life-long task and the process can be expected to mature with experience, it is fundamental for conductors to practice efficient and meaningful score-study.

Using the Socratic method Kenneth Kiesler leads conductors in daily score study. At the moment of confronting great works of the human spirit it is important to quiet one's ego. This approach is practiced. Multiple facets of the music are explored: harmonies, counterpoint, tempo markings, dynamics, articulations, melodies, orchestration, text choices, etc. Also discussed: a work's historical milieu, influences and inspiration from other sources including other composers, philosophers, art, architecture, etc. Through observation of the subtlest detail to grasping the over-arching formal structure of entire symphonies, Kiesler demonstrates the musical expression and genuine empowerment made possible when music is fully absorbed and empathy with the composer is achieved. Participants learn to approach the score by asking of it certain questions. It is the answers to these questions that can inspire greater musical leadership, a life-long fullness, and joy in studying and performing music.
