You may find that an important part of the Retreat will be the opportunity to reduce stress, become more focused, and to allow your musical work to germinate.  Taking time to have fun, relax, exercise, and enjoy nature can be important element in the process.

Sports and Recreation

Walking and Running
Those who wish to run or walk before breakfast, after dinner, or any other time will find many paths to take. Take care in crossing and running or walking on Route 220.  Use the left side of the road so you can see oncoming vehicles.  This once was a quiet country road and at times it still appears to be one, but time and progress have had their effects.

Hiking
There are a number of trails right on the Medomak property which present easy hikes.  Highly recommended is Camden Hills State Park about 30 minutes away - a bit more challenging.  There you can go up and down Mount Megunticook in 2 to 2 1/2 hours, or climb Mount Battie, or take a trip up one and down into the valley and then up the other.  There is a road to the top of Battie so someone could pick you up there.

Waterfront
The beach and docks at the waterfront are available for your for swimming, diving, and canoeing.  There will be no lifeguard.  Bring a friend with you.  Please don't venture alone on or into the lake. Canoes and Kayaks are available at the beach known as The Cove.  Take life preservers and bring an extra paddle.  The island you will see is known as Loon's Island.  It is fun to make a trip around it, or to the other side of the lake.  Do check the wind outside the cove before venturing past the point. There is fishing to be done right at Medomak or in the countless other lakes and rivers nearby.  Please check with us about license information.

Tennis and Basketball
Tennis courts are located at what is known as the Junior Camp.  The basketball court is located near the Lodge in Senior Camp.

Museums and Galleries
There are a number of artists living and working not too far away.  There are also several galleries and museums.  Highly recommended:  The Farnsworth Museum in Rockland.  The Farnsworth has a permanent collection of Maine artists, including the Wyeths, and features touring exhibits.

Libraries
Medomak has two libraries.  The one known as the Lew Evans Library will be one of the quiet places to study.  The town of Washington also has a new library.

The Campfire

At the end of the day the campfire is lit and people gather around to enjoy each other's company, share thoughts, and tell jokes. Fireflies flash in the distance, the song of the loons can be heard echoing from the lake, and occasionally smores are savored. Some evenings are fun and social; others are quiet and reflective. Snacks are provided in the lodge and beverages are available.

Browsing or Shopping
A trip through Luce's Bargain Barn in Washington can be surprisingly entertaining.  The towns of Camden and Rockport offer boutiques and crafts. There is an L.L. Bean factory outlet and many other outlets in Rockport. Occasionally a group will make a day trip out of going outlet shopping.

Seacoast Exploring
There are a number of beautiful and rugged coastal areas and beaches.  You may want to visit one of Maine's classic lighthouses, or wander the beach collecting shells.  We would be happy to provide more information.
